Important Government consultation on red diesel – respond by 9th September 2019

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) is consulting boaters and fuel suppliers on how to implement the 2018 European Court of Justice ruling that the UK cannot allow “private pleasure craft” to use red diesel for propulsion. Please respond if you can, so that the HMRC understands the impact on individual Bargee Travellers.

The Government has stated that it must implement this ruling, even though the tax regime for diesel could be changed after/ if the UK leaves the EU. The consultation asks questions about the impact of the changes and proposed penalties on individual boaters, including how long any adjustment period should last for and how long it will take for boaters to use up their supplies of red diesel, so it’s important to respond. There are 11 questions for boaters and 9 questions for fuel suppliers. The closing date is Monday 9th September 2019.
